Our Story

A leap of Faith

Deep in the heart of rural Bengal, we convinced a single weaver to challenge the conservative Jamdani motifs and trust our experimental designs. His initial hesitation quickly made way for enthusiasm and set the tone for what is today the unconventional Karomi Jamdani.

KAROMI

Expressing action and intention, “Karomi” is a Sanskrit phrase meaning “I do” or “I create”. The phrase reaffirms our brand’s commitment to nurture the rich textile language of India by making design-focused interventions that celebrate artistry and cement its place in the continuously unfolding narrative of modern fashion. At Karomi we are committed to evolving the art of Indian textile to sustain the medium, and thereby sustain its artisans.

Strength to Strength

Today, we work with several weaving clusters in Bengal. What makes Karomi Jamdani unconventional is its artistic approach to design. Modern in spirit, rooted in tradition, a multifaceted studio bridges the gap from village to market. Thus, making the leap from sustaining the craft and villages, to dressing the chic, sophisticated, environmentally conscious consumer.

Over the years, apart from weaving, we have grown to work with other crafts such as hand-block printing and kantha embroidery. In recognition of innovation and quality in handloom weaving, Karomi received the UNESCO Award of Excellence for Handicrafts in 2012 and 2014.
